The futility of war in this climate

As battles rage in Ukraine, Gaza and many other place around the world with bombs dropped, buildings blown-up and tanks burning through diesel, I’m astonished that so little is said about this “carbon bomb”. Think how much additional CO2 is released in these conflict and how much of the planet’s precious resources are consumed in the struggle over territory. Instead of looking after God’s creation, human beings are blasting it to smithereens!

I did come across this analysis by Time magazine , which makes some interesting points, but that was from February 2023 – before the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in June. Tragically, the West’s half-hearted support for Ukraine against Russia seems only to be causing the fires to rage for longer and creating more damage to our shared environment. We have also seen more drilling for oil and gas in the UK and USA, diluting the hoped-for tilt towards renewable energies in the countries that have sanctioned Russia’s biggest export.

Amidst all the fire and fury, we have now also experienced the hottest year on record. Humanity’s greatest threat is clear – why are we wasting so much time and effort in other pursuits? It’s futile to fight over the scraps if the whole planet descends into anarchy because of man-made climate change.

We need to wake-up and pressure our world leaders to tackle what is the greatest adversary facing us. We must look after God’s creation or the earth will vomit us out. Whilst the fighting rages, we all lose.
